Emily & Ben at the Haweswater Hotel in the Lake District

What a beautiful day in the Lakes. The weather was changeable and the landscape bold, a perfect combination as a backdrop for Emily & Ben’s wedding at the Haweswater Hotel in Penrith in Cumbria. Emily and Ben had brought their families over from the US to celebrate with them. They love the UK and especially the wild areas such as the Lakes and the surrounding villages.

The weather as you might expect for the area took a turn for the worst just before we were going to go into the hills for some portraits. However both Emily and Ben were keen to embrace the Yorkshire weather and the windswept look added to the feel. It was a lovely way to start the day. A first look followed by a short walk beside the huge reservoir.

Back at the hotel the ceremony took place conducted by a friend, followed by eating, dancing and general fun. I used a mixture of film and digital to capture the moments. Here are a few highlights:

Here is another wedding from Haweswater. This was a few years earlier with James and Alba. I wanted to know if there was particular connection. James told me it was where he first brought Alba when she came to England and so going back there for the wedding gave the surrounding landscape a beautiful significance to the day.

The evening before the wedding I arrived for a little recce of the surrounding area and knew if the weather was good the backdrops would be amazing. I found a spot with a short walk (nearly a climb in places) where the valleys were on display. Again despite the weather we ventured into the hills and the results were stunning.. The rest of the day was filled with intimate moments and the overall feel was beautifully relaxed.
